Cadeira de tortura do século XVIII era instrumento essencial em interrogatórios na Europa Central, especialmente em Nuremberg, até o ano 1846. O réu sentava-se nu, e, com o mínimo movimento, as agulhas penetravam-lhe o corpo, provocando efeitos terríveis. Em outras versões, a cadeira apresentava assento de ferro, que podia ser aquecido até ficar em brasa. A cadeira do retrato foi encontrada no castelo San Leo, na Itália. Nele morreu o célebre mago Cagliostro, que conquistou todas as cortes da Europa. A cadeira tem 1.606 pontas de madeira e 23 de ferro.
