Em 1859, um burguês chamado James White, comprou alguns terrenos na periferia da cidade para construir uma mansão de retiro espiritual. Rico e influente contratou um dos melhores arquitetos de seu tempo para conceber o que seria a melhor vila da cidade. Para acessar o local teria que cruzar um pequeno riacho local, portanto, o projeto da ponte foi feito de acordo com a mansão para antecipar a sua elegância vitoriana, assim nasceu a Overtoun bridge.
