Porta do Inferno

      Porta do ou para o Inferno é um buraco de 100 metros de largura encontrado no Turcomenistão. Um acidente de perfuração em 1971, durante a União Soviética, causou esse furo gigante que vaza gases perigosos. Cientistas perceberam que a melhor solução era queimá-los, e atearam fogo nos gases. Desde então, eles ainda queimam sem parar, e seu brilho pode ser visto a quilômetros de distância. Não se sabe quando (ou se) o fogo vai se extinguir.
Também conhecido como Darvaz, Darvaza, ou Derweze (“O Portão”, em turcomano), o buraco fica em uma vila com esse nome com cerca de 350 habitantes, localizada a 260 quilômetros ao norte de Ashgabat, no meio do deserto de Kara-Kum. A região é rica em petróleo, enxofre e gás natural.

Hell Gate

 

Door or Hell is a hole 100 meters wide found in Turkmenistan. A drilling accident in 1971, during the Soviet Union, caused this giant hole that leaks dangerous gases. Scientists realized that the best solution was to burn them, and set fire to gas. Since then, they still burn endlessly, and its brightness can be seen kilometers away. We do not know when (or if) the fire will be extinguished.

Also known as Derweze, Darvaza or Derweze ("The Gate" in Turkmen), the hole is in a village of that name with about 350 inhabitants located 260 kilometers north of Ashgabat, in the middle of the desert Kara Kum. The region is rich in oil, sulfur and natural gas.
